Installation Artwork ‘Blooming Horseshoe’ on Roundabout Vogelwaarde

How do you visualize more than a century of passion, craftsmanship and innovative entrepreneurship? The answer recently shows on the roundabout along the Provinciale Weg near Rapenburg (Hulst). The new artwork, ‘Blooming Horseshoe’, tells the story of the growth and craftsmanship of five generations of the Kerckhaert family, founders of the globally renowned and also Vogelwaarde-based Royal Kerckhaert Horseshoe Factory.

The artwork symbolises our history and the continuous drive to innovate,’ said Michiel Kerckhaert, who - together with brother Martin - represents the current generation. ‘It brings together our roots and our future and offers a tribute to the five generations that have shaped our company.’

A realisation with the Province of Zeeland and Municipality of Hulst

The first plans for the artwork emerged back in 2016 when meetings started about the construction of the round road - Honoré Kerckhaertweg - around Vogelwaarde. It was only after the completion of this road earlier this year that discussions with the Province of Zeeland, the Municipality of Hulst and the Royal Kerckhaert Hoefijzerfabriek about the artwork were initiated.

After an intensive design and preparation period, the final design was approved in early 2024. Glenn Paridaen from Eede was selected to actually produce the artwork. On 17 December 2024, the artworks were installed, crowning a good and joint effort.

An ode to five generations

The artwork is a powerful visual representation of the evolution of the family business. It symbolises the growth, blooming and development of the horseshoe factory over the years and the unique contribution of each generation of Kerckhaert.

Michiel Kerckhaert: ‘We hope that ’Blooming Horseshoe' will not only be an eye-catcher for passers-by, but also inspire and provide a lasting reminder of what passion and dedication can achieve.’

An asset for Vogelwaarde

The installation of the artwork not only highlights the historical and economic significance of the Royal Kerckhaert Horseshoe Factory for the region, but also strengthens the identity of Vogelwaarde. It is a powerful example of how art can bridge past and future, tradition and innovation.

Visit the roundabout along the Provincial Road and be inspired by 'Blooming Horseshoe ’ - a tribute to more than 100 years of craftsmanship and a symbol of pride for the whole region.
